From Our Heart

The first Senior I ever loved was Grandpa Jim, or as others knew him, “Big Jim.” He was funny, kind and always made us laugh with his silly jokes. Seniors have taught me to live life to the fullest, to stop and enjoy the little things. At MorningStar, team members are treated like family. The company not only goes above and beyond to care for seniors, but they extend that reach around the world with orphan care and clean water initiatives.

Mary was the quintessential Italian grandmother. At 4’10" Nana would make pastries and pasta, all the while smiling and laughing and urging me to “eat, eat, eat”! The seniors I serve today teach me to be patient, humble, grateful and to cherish the moment, I was strongly drawn to MorningStar by its culture, values and philanthropy. I am at home here to a degree I have never felt in previous professional positions.

When I consider the seniors who have had the most influence on me, I think of Dutch from 27 years ago when I was a caregiver in Willoughby, OH. Caring for him made me realize that I make a difference. My values align with those of MorningStar. When I read about its origins and Founder Ken Jaeger’s inspiration, it gave me goosebumps. Our mission says a lot about what we stand for as a company.

My love for seniors comes from Grandpa Loreto and Grandma Simona. Grandfather was a pastor and "Mona" is a prayer warrior and backbone of our family. Seniors are a population that have so much to offer. By their eventful lives, full of hills and valleys, they can share wisdom and guidance, having likely experienced whatever you may be going through. I admire MorningStar for unashamedly keeping God at the forefront of their values.

My "Obachan" (Japanese for grandmother), Yuri, was so kind and compassionate. She taught me how to help and love others, especially my elders. They have so much experience and knowledge to share. MorningStar’s mission drew me in, especially its commitment to strong moral values and ethics. Our leaders model that commitment.

I was named Mary (“Sho sho” in Swahili) after my grandmother who was very caring and went out of her way to take care of others. Seniors have so many values and life lessons to teach us. Their greatest message to us is to live your life to the fullest. I was attracted to MorningStar because it is a faith-based company with so many opportunities for my professional growth.

My heart for seniors found its home first with my Grandpa Martin. I would often visit him in his senior community, doing activities, going for walks or just reminiscing. Working with seniors is extremely rewarding. They teach me to love unconditionally and to be very patient. I love and enjoy my coworkers at MorningStar, and absolutely love the residents!

The Lord placed it in my heart to serve seniors by providing a listening ear, selfless love and gratitude. Job 12:12 reminds us the value of speaking to older adults. MorningStar shows what a servant’s heart looks like in the way they give back to the team and broader community, making them different from any other senior living community.

My Mamaw (great-grandma) was the first senior I ever loved. Coming to MorningStar from a fast-paced healthcare setting, I welcome the opportunity to slow down and truly get to know our residents well. MorningStar’s core values are our distinguishing mark. Spreading radiance daily makes me a happier, healthier person, knowing I have touched someone’s heart.
